The MATES pre-application ballot aims to give eligible Indian nationals equal access to MATES. The ballot provides a fair and transparent process by randomly selecting people to apply for the visa.
Through the ballot, the Australian Government will allocate 3,000 temporary visa places for primary applicants per program year. Primary applicants may bring members of the family unit, who will not be counted towards the 3,000 places.
To be able to apply for the stream visa, you must first register in the MATES ballot. If you are randomly selected in the MATES ballot, you can then apply for the visa. To find out if you can register in the ballot,

There is a ballot registration fee of AUD25.
If
selected in the ballot, you will be required to meet additional visa
criteria for the grant of a Subclass 403 MATES stream visa. Please
review both the ballot and visa criteria before submitting a ballot
registration.
Ballot status
The status of the ballot may change during a program year. This will depend on:
- when registrations opened
- how many registrations we receive
- how many selections have occurred
- whether we extended the registration and/or selection periods.
PENDING – The ballot is pending commencement or opening.
ACTIVE – The ballot is open and you can submit your registration.
CLOSED – The ballot period is closed. You cannot submit further registrations and the selection process is pending for this ballot.
EXPIRED – We have finalised selections for this ballot. We will not make any further selections from this ballot.

Ballot selection period
The table below shows the open and close dates for the MATES ballot selection period. This is when we can randomly select registrations for the ballot during program year 2025-2026.

To be eligible to register in the MATES ballot, you must:
- create an ImmiAccount
- hold a valid Indian passport
- hold a valid permanent account number (PAN card) issued by the Indian Government
- be aged between 18 - 30 years (inclusive) at the beginning of the ballot registration open period for that process
- not already be registered in the MATES ballot
- have a valid email address
- agree to registration form declarations
- pay the ballot registration fee (AUD25).
If selected in the ballot, you will be required to meet additional visa criteria for the grant of a Subclass 403 MATES stream visa, Please review both the ballot and visa criteria before submitting a ballot registration.
You
can be inside or outside Australia to register in the ballot. If
selected, you can only apply for a Subclass 403 MATES stream visa from
outside Australia.
Ballot registration period
You can only register:
- while the ballot registration period is open
- once in each ballot process.
Once we have closed a ballot, you cannot submit a registration in that ballot.
There
will be an annual MATES ballot process held. If you miss the
registration period for the MATES ballot, and you continue to meet the
eligibility requirements, you may be able to submit a registration in a
future ballot.
Include family
Eligible members of the family unit (such as a spouse or partner) can also register in the ballot separately.
You do not need to give details of your eligible family members in your ballot registration.
If you are selected in the ballot to apply for a Subclass 403 MATES stream visa, you will be the main applicant in the visa application. As the main applicant, you can include members of the family unit in your application.

Ballot step by step
Check:
- you meet the eligibility requirements to register in the ballot
- you have a valid Indian passport
- the registration period is open.
Make sure you understand that:
- you must be selected in the ballot to be able to apply for a Subclass 403 MATES stream visa
- submitting a registration and paying the ballot fee does not guarantee you will be selected
- if selected to apply for the visa, you must pay a non-refundable visa application charge and meet the additional visa eligibility criteria to be granted a visa.
Cost of your registration
The ballot registration fee is AUD25. You will be prompted to enter payment details after you submit your registration. Your registration will not be valid until you pay the fee. We will not refund you the ballot fee even if you are not selected in the ballot.

- apply for visa
- Complete all the details required on the form:
- your name
- your date of birth
- your valid passport details
- your permanent account number (PAN)
- your email address to contact you
- your eligible qualification
- your eligible field of study
- declare you understand the eligibility requirements to register in the ballot
- Submit the registration form
- Pay the ballot registration fee online.
